Bishops is closing its Pearl District salon and reopening it as a barbershop on July 1. Bishops owner Leo Rivera sent the Mercury a head in a box yesterday afternoon, a la Gwyneth Paltrow in Seven, to announce the closure:

The head had “We fucked up” scrawled on the back, and was accompanied by a “ransom note” of sorts:

Rivera says he wanted to grow the company by adopting a new business model, “bringing the cool edginess” of his “rock’n’roll barbershops to a higher-end salon setting.” Basically, however, “the thing fell flat…and no amount of VO5 was going to make it stick.”
Rivera says it’s “experiment over and lesson learned.” There’ll be a “freedom from pretension party” at the salon on August 1 from 7-10pm. The new salon will feature wall art by Buff Monster, Tara McPherson, and Richard Jones. Unfortunately I just had my hair cut.
