For the last few seasons, I've been a little obsessed with scarves. I'm not talking about wooly winter wraps but rather summer scarves--silk ascots, bandannas, chiffon ties.
Here, at Bottega Veneta, Spring 2009.
In the real world, though? I've never quite known how to pull them off without looking like Thurston Howell III.
Then I met Zebra. You know him from Sissy Boy. I know him as my new fashion icon: the boy wears scarves with aplomb. Effortless!
Traditional bandanna:
Look for off colors. Red or blue = boring. Also, make sure it's faded, new looks inauthentic. Zebra gets all of his scarves at the bins.
Chiffon:
Chiffon or silk, either way it's going to look too preppy if you pick muted colors. So go bright and look for fabric from non-traditional sources: Zebra made this from a pair of curtains.
Fringe:
This one's my favorite; it's the most original, yet the easiest to wear. Just throw it on. The messier the better.

Yawn. This is some kind of Portland dude official uniform. I see guys wearing this outfit every day: tshirt, neckerchief and tight jeans.
