First Friday is upon us again, and this month it brings us the opening ceremonies of Emily Baker's Sword + Fern (811 E Burnside #114--ex-Hazel Grayslayer), the latest addition to the musical chairs of stores and studios that is 811. Yesterday, Emily (who, in addition to her store-owning, jewelry making, wildcrafting, and landscaping, plays the drums in Love Menu with fellow designer Emily Katz) gave me a sneak peek of the store as she was bringing together the last minute details (like an installation in the front window, and, er, pricing) before the opening tonight from 6 'til late.

While I was there I ran into Heather Treadway of Paperdoll Fashion, who was dropping off some pieces she had just finished for the store, which featured lot of bright, punchy colors ("I am squeezing out the last drops of summer!" says Emily). My favorite was this futuristic short sleeved windbreaker vest (also in hot pink), as well as some taupe-y pieces featuring braided belts meant for around your waist, but I wanted them around my neck, while Emily proposed around your head, which led to an agreement that Arkie Whiteley in The Road Warrior had the right idea with hair:

Here's an array of Sword + Fern jewelry, mostly earrings made of fasteners used on car parts. I love the shape, and the bigger the better. Emily has tons of variations on these.

Among many other lovely little antiques and notions are some of Emily's lip balms that she makes in small batches. Look for other Ladyhawk Botanicals down the road, from tinctures and salves to dried herbs and teas.

The store is very personal, with loads of specially selected vintage pieces for the home and for wearing. For 254 square feet, there are a surprising number of small treasures to look at.
