Boutiques Unleashed

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Fri, Feb 27, 2009 at 9:37 AM

If you ever read Blogtown on Fridays, you may be aware that it is a special day of the week here at the Mercury. It began as Cat Friday, but has evolved to include puppies and even cots and buttermilk biscuits (don't ask).

Anyway. In honor of Cat Friday I thought I'd put a calendar item out there that combines my twin passions for boutique shopping and healthy pets (when these two things combine at a store like Meat it is rapturous). The event is the annual Boutiques Unleashed, a human/animal fashion show that is the crowning jewel of Portland's pet fashion week (yes, I am quite serious), March 9-15. In it, human models sport merch from area boutiques, as do their canine (and sometimes more exotic) runway companions. It's partly about fashion, but mostly about cute. This year Meringue, Sofia, Polliwog, Physical Element, Tumbleweed, Urban Edge (404 NW 10th), Pin Me, Eclectikid, and Michael Allen's are contributing, and it's a fun way to benefit a local institution that has some of the most progressive, and impressive, animal-related programs in the nation: DoveLewis. The show will specifically go to the Pet Loss Support program, which is probably the hardest-to-sell on the charity front (it's basically group therapy for pet owners after their animals have died, which is sad and all, but not exactly blankets for homeless crack babies or shelters for battered women or anything), although this video gives a good rundown of all the good things the institution as a whole accomplishes, and it's filled with cute animals, which is the whole point of having Cat Fridays in a universe full of toil and anguish:

The Show takes place on Friday, March 13 at the Wonder Ballroom. General tix are a little spendy at $60, but include free booze and heavy hors d'oeuvres and didn't you see those cute animals in the video??!! More info here.

Last Day for Foundation Garments

Posted by Kamala Puligandla on Thu, Feb 26, 2009 at 3:00 PM

Today is the absolute last day that Foundation Garments, at 2712 NE Alberta St, will be opening its doors! While this is rather disappointing news, it does mean that everything is massively discounted and priced to literally obliterate the inventory.

Some sale highlights: Naked and Famous denim at 50% off, Swrve cycling gear at 40% off and everything else at least 40% off and up to 70%. As noted by Foundation's president, Heidi Clemson, "Being from the Midwest, Nate and I are not opposed to haggling so bring it on." So go now, before it's too late.

This Erhart sweatshirt is a mere fraction of the original retail price. And it's not alone.

Modified Style—Transformed Fashion Show in PDX

Posted by Kamala Puligandla on Thu, Feb 26, 2009 at 11:13 AM

The name pretty much says it all: this DIY fashion show is about reusing scraps of fabric, from satin to an old rug, and turning them into gorgeous pieces to wear. The organizers of the show, Andrea Fretwell and Janessa Philemon-Kerp, are Portlanders who were inspired by a fashion show of the same kind, in which they were a designer/model team in Seattle in 2008. For the new and improved Portland version, they collected scrap donations from around town and found 23 local designers to participate in this Project Runway-esque challenge. Instead of a matter or hours, however, they get 2/12 months to complete their fashion creations, which seems fortunate for some of the designers, who are reported to have absolutely no sewing experience. But maybe when working with an old rug, it's more about creativity than sewing expertise. In any case, the range of designer experience is vast and it will be fun to see what they all produce. Especially because at the end of the night, you can make a bid at the silent auction to take home your favorite garment.

The Modified Style event will take place on May 17th at 7pm in the charming Secret Society Ballroom. Tickets are $10-15 and all proceeds will benefit The Farm Sanctuary, Sisters of the Road, and Junior League Portland.

Reusing materials and donating to charity? You can’t argue with fashion like this.

Recession Buster: The Sixer

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Thu, Feb 26, 2009 at 9:55 AM

There are plenty of young people in Portland who refuse to let their poverty prevent them from being stylish. The mother ship for these types is, of course, the Sellwood Goodwill Bins, where merchandise arranged in what can only be described as troughs is picked through all day every day by the scavenging masses, and bought up for only 69 cents a pound. Those willing to get their hands dirty are often rewarded with perfectly good merchandise, from small electronics to clothing. A whole subsection of this community turns around their discoveries for sale on Ebay, or makes a quick buck with it at places like Buffalo Exchange or Red Light. If you're really serious about busting the recession blues, you'll of course go straight to the source, although the Bins has its share of inconveniences (it requires time and diligence to be worth the trek out to its rather isolated location). The next best thing might be The Sixer (3611 SE Division), a store/collective set to open this weekend, on Sunday the 1st. Founded by two self-described "veterans" of the bins with more than a decade of experience, Breanna Adee and Jacob LaValley form the founding core of the venture along with "'picker'/seamstress/tailor/designer-esque" cohorts on the periphery.

9cd5/1235672684-a___j.jpg

Breanna & Jacob: models of "bin chic"

As per the name, every item at the store is priced at only $6 (a tiny mark-up—you'd be surprised how much you've probably paid for bins rescues elsewhere), with 1200 sq ft of merch that includes clothing, shoes, and accessories that are either vintage, current, or reconstructed/altered. They are also in negotiations with the landlord about possibly expanding into an additional 1,000 sq ft, are working on adding to their collection of '70s pinball machines, and have plans to add a section of vinyl records to the mix. Hit the break for a couple shots of the unopened store's interior, or better yet drop by on Sunday to paw your way around.

Nolita Warehouse Sale

Posted by Kamala Puligandla on Wed, Feb 25, 2009 at 1:50 PM

The perfect pair of jeans can be hard to come by. But Nolita, located at 736 NW 11th in the Pearl, has a fully stocked premium denim bar and is prepared to assist men and women in finding that perfect fit. With a denim collection that features over 30 designers, there is a real possibility that you will encounter the jean of your dreams: the one that matches your personality down to the seams and finishing details.

To make the deal sweeter, starting tomorrow Nolita is offering a warehouse sale, meaning 50-80% off of everything. This includes True Religion and Rock & Republic jeans in men and women’s styles, as well as lines they don’t usually carry in the Portland store, like Juicy Couture, Jarbo and Marlova. The sale begins Thursday, Feb 26th and runs until Sunday, March 1st. Store hours are 11am-6pm, 11-5pm on Sunday. Check it out—who doesn’t need an amazing pair of jeans?

From the Ground Up: Buckman Art Show & Sell

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Wed, Feb 25, 2009 at 1:47 PM

As you no doubt are aware, this week is a crucial one for schools in Oregon, with the legislature forced to yet again make lemonade out of budgetary lemons. Luckily there are schools in Portland like Buckman Elementary that have maintained the arts as a crucial element of their education focus. Public schools aren't going to have many resources to help them maintain it for the foreseeable future, though, which makes this year's 19th annual juried art show and sale all the more important. Over 120 artists and craftspeople from the Pacific Northwest are slated to be involved this year, with food and music joining the meat of the event, which features regionally made goods like jewelry, ceramics, toys, and aprons along with items I didn't even know existed (knitting stitch markers?). The two-day extravaganza is probably the largest assemblage of region art and craft outside of the holiday season, and—must it be said?—the community's participation is as important this year as it ever has been. It's what you call a "win-win." Mark your calendar: March 6 (5-9 pm) & 7 (10 am-5 pm) at Buckman (320 SE 16th), $5 Friday admission, $2 suggested donation on Saturday.

Via New York: Leanne Marshall's Fall '09

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Tue, Feb 24, 2009 at 10:50 AM

As promised, Leanne Marshall just sent me photos from her presentation on Thursday during New York fashion week. She sounds a bit breathless, having put it together more or less in just three weeks, but as you can see it looks anything but thrown together. My favorites are the gold pieces, the gray swing coat, and the jagged, short, sleeveless purple party dress. Props to Anna Thiesson for the photography.

Oscar Fashion

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 10:11 AM

What... the... crap. Last night's Oscar awards were fun and all, but as one of the few events on the world calendar where couture is de rigueur, the red carpet fashion was kind of a bummer, with mostly (recession inspired?) safe choices in basic colors. The color trends were overwhelmingly white and red, some of the best looks were belted, and some of the worst ideas involved fish tails. The best of the safe ones was unquestionably Anne Hathaway, whose classic Armani Prive gown was shamelessly luxe, although Hathaway could have looked a smidge more comfortable wearing it:

82b2/1235413669-84976723_10.jpg

Safe as houses.

Best of the belted:

d44e/1235413790-84975989_10.jpg
3976/1235414217-84976545_10.jpg

I know, right? Miley Cyrus and SJP? Life is full of surprises. Cyrus' dress has been met with divided opinion, but this is my favorite use of a fish motif, and I am crazy for the belt. Parker's I like less—it's a bit too matrimonial, but the pickin's were on the slim side this year.

My controversial pick:

4e18/1235414478-84976848_10.jpg

Jessica Biel's dress is unremarkable at first glance, and she's taking hits from the pundits for the unusual construction up front. But it's actually growing on me the more I look at it. It's clean and fresh, like an artfully folded kerchief, and there's a Japanese vibe that I'm feeling. Plus, she looks comfortable and natural, unlike most of her red carpet peers.

And then there were all the fish.

Mark On Call

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Fri, Feb 20, 2009 at 12:39 PM

There's a new toy out for the iPhone that looks like a must for interior designers, of both the professional and hobbyist variety: Mark on Call is an app you can download for $9.99, and it's getting rave reviews. Based on interior designer Mark Lewison's book What Would You Do With This Room?, you can make virtual floor plans (based in reality or fantasy), use it in tandem with the camera to scale colors and textures, and more. It's being billed as an invaluable asset to professionals, but it also sounds like something that's a helluva lot more fun than Tetris to play with.

Dragonlily Spring Preview Party

Posted by Molly "The Intern" Georgetta on Fri, Feb 20, 2009 at 11:24 AM

I'm unfortunately prone to [causing minor] car accidents, and I have an irrational fear that Dragonlily Boutique may one day be the cause of one of my mishaps; I tend to find their outdoor mannequins more interesting to look at than the road. But who can drive past and not cop a look? It's very likely that I'm not the only one facing an impending crash due to pretty clothes and ADD. I just hope no bikers are involved.

Dragonlily, located on 18th and Hawthorne, is celebrating the arrival of the slightly warmer season with a Skip into Spring Celebration Event! It's happening Saturday, February 21st, from 3-8pm only!

What does this event entail, you ask? Lovely question.
It involves: 15% off all new Spring items; tarot readings by Kali Rose between 4:30- 7:30; free head, neck or hand massages by Soma Arts; complimentary Mimosa's, Wine and Hors d' Oeuvres AND you can enter the drawing for a $100 Gift Certificate!

419b/1235159526-babykakes.jpg

Not only will they be getting great new things in from their current brands (Malagueta, Babykakes, MahaDevi, ipseity, 2-mile, Wema, Xila, Ann Madland, Lynnie Dee, Amy Joy Fields), but they've just picked up two new brands, MahaDevi and Jemini.

Breathless Vintage

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Thu, Feb 19, 2009 at 10:36 AM

I've just about given up my arguments against online shopping, seeing as how many Portland designers I know have been buoyed by the power of Esty. I'm not saying I'm a convert—I still like to see things in person—but I'm just going to shut up about it, and accept that for whatever reason that train left the station and I refused to get on it. That said, I love online stores. I spend so much time in front of a computer that I can hardly wrap my mind around it when people want to "surf the web" for "fun." I'm like yo, buddy, my "job" is "fun," so no YouTubing at the party, you know? Anyhow. Cruising online stores is literally the only diversion the web has to offer me that can compel me on a Sunday afternoon, especially if it's got a local hook. Which brings me to Breathless Vintage, a Portland-based used clothing store that also has a charming blog. The inventory is not overwhelmingly extensive, but the prices are reasonable, and the items look to be in good condition, mostly sticking to greats like Cacharel, Oscar de la Renta, and other labels that make your heart go pitter-pat on a particularly victorious day at the thrift store. After tooling around on the site's search engine (you can also sign up to have alerts sent directly to you) I landed on this Jaeger shirt with French cuffs from the '70s, made in Sweden, for 75 bucks, a basic piece promising lots of mileage. Spiffy, no?

Wish I Was There

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Wed, Feb 18, 2009 at 3:34 PM

A couple weeks ago I received my invitation to see Leanne Marshall's latest collection at New York Fashion Week (not at the Bryant Park tents this time naturally—she's doing a drop-in presentation rather than a full-on runway event). It goes down tomorrow, and obviously I'm on the wrong coast. But I wanted to wish her luck from Portland... I've also asked her to send me some photos. In the meantime peep her new web site for some of her greatest hits.

Call to Designers: Strut

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Tue, Feb 17, 2009 at 5:25 PM

Passing this on from the Strut team:

Since STRUT was founded four years ago we have continued to grow this event as a showcase for Portland designers and a benefit for equality in Oregon. Each year we continue to grow attendance and increase our fundraising for Basic Rights Oregon. With the annual success of the show and the rave reviews in the media (The Mercury, Willamette Week, Ultra, Just Out, PDX Magazine and The Oregonian), we continue to work on making this one of the premiere fashion events of the year! Sponsors this year include: Willamette Week, Q6 Model & Artist MGMT., Royce's Prop Shop, Rudy's, KNRK 94.7, and Vibrant Tables to name a few. This will also be our first year as an all ages event!

We would like to invite you to submit your designs for a spring fashion show to be held on Saturday May 16th at Luxe Auto House. This is a unique opportunity to raise money for a great cause while showcasing your designs to the public at no cost to your company. A little volunteer time and help in distributing marketing materials are all that is required. We are looking to really showcase the diversity of designers in Portland and hope you will consider supporting Basic Rights Oregon while bringing something fun and different to the runway.

To submit your designs for consideration, simply send two image samples of your work to StrutPDX@gmail.com along with your company name, contact name, contact phone number, a brief description of your work (50 words or less) and where your line is available for purchase by March 1st.

After a quick review, our committee of industry professionals will contact those chosen for the show in mid March. Unfortunately, not everyone can be in the show due to the vast amount of talented local designers. If your company is not chosen and you would still like to be involved, there will be plenty of opportunities for volunteering, advertising and sponsorship!

Button It Up with Susan Beal

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Tue, Feb 17, 2009 at 10:07 AM

For those of you crafters who devoured Susan Beal's Bead Simple last year, she's got a fresh one waiting in the wings: Button It Up is a collection of 80 projects using vintage and new buttons for jewelry, housewares, clothing, toys, bags, and more, plus bonus tutorials like how to cast your own buttons (color me impressed). The book is officially released on March 3rd, with two planned events in town next month (Powells downtown on March 20 and Bolt Fabric Boutique on March 28). In the meantime, Beal is holding a contest of sorts on her blog through the 24th—a week from today, where four people who write button-related blog comments will be randomly chosen to win one of two signed advance author copies of the book, or two button grab bags from her own vast button collection. You guys can win this thing.

Narcisse Reopens At Last

Posted by Molly "The Intern" Georgetta on Mon, Feb 16, 2009 at 2:32 PM

The "Arctic Blast" did more than just inconvenience and piss off (can I say that?) Portlanders trying to accomplish anything during its almost two week stay in December. Poor Narcisse, a women's boutique next door to Frances May on Washington St in downtown Portland, suffered a bit worse than the rest of us. The store, which had only been open for three months, and is the only store in the States to carry the Danish brand Noa Noa, had to shut down on December 26th due to catastrophic flooding!!

I am not exaggerating; catastrophic! The flooding was due to a missing vent pipe cap on the roof, which unfortunately allowed the 18 inches of wretched snow to cascade into the pipes, melt, then make its way down 4 floors to ruin the new boutique in all its glory. The three stories above the shop were empty, so there was nobody to cry wolf once the water started to invade and work its way down. Five whole style runs were ruined in the washout, as were three or four pieces of furniture.

The good news is that Narcisse is reopening today with a big sale to rid the store of what fall pieces the Blast didn't get its dirty wet paws on. Spring merchandise is soon arriving, and keep your eyes open for information about their big Grand (re)Opening taking place sometime soon. Be sure to stop in this afternoon if you can, they're open till 7.

Vintage Suit Shopping

Posted by Brett Glass on Mon, Feb 16, 2009 at 11:06 AM

ff3b/1234815423-paulnewmanpicture.jpg
I've recently warmed to the idea of wearing a suit. The kind of two button, slim cut suit Paul Newman would have worn in the 60s.
Finding this style, however, has been a bit...challenging. Last week, I asked the people at three of my favorite vintage shops for guidance. If you're in the market for a suit with style (and don't have the cash for a custom-made Adam Arnold or Duchess suit) check out the tips below.

Avalon Antiques & Vintage Clothes
Unlike most Portland vintage stores, Avalon has a pretty tight focus on formal wear. Owner Simon Cheesman advises trying on suits all over your size range (two sizes above and below your normal jacket size). Look for fit in the shoulders and length—everything else can be tailored. To make it easy, they have a tailor on site every Thursday and Friday. Don't be afraid to ask which suits can be tailored to fit you!

Keep 'Em Flying
What this tiny store on West 21st lacks in volume, it makes up for in quality. Every suit is stylish and in great shape. Employee Alicia Justus suggests coming in regularly, as stock is updated every day. Apparently I just missed out on a YSL jacket and vest, which was sold hours after it hit the floor. Bummer.

Hollywood Vintage
With possibly the largest suit collection in the city, Hollywood Vintage can be a little daunting. According to employee Rodney Bender, suits are arranged by era, so If you're looking for a particular cut, research the period before you shop. Otherwise, you're going to have to do a lot of digging.

"The Kluminator"

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Mon, Feb 16, 2009 at 10:41 AM

I'm adding "-inator" to "-palooza" in my growing list of suffixes that are astonishingly still in play. That, said, Heidi Klum has re-imagined herself yet again, this time as a superhero, saving fashion week... designer clothing, or... defending models? I can't really tell, but it's a new web series called Spiked Heel, premiering tonight at midnight Modelinia. Also in tow: Coco Rocha (she has a blog!) Anyhow, it looks kinda stooopid:

Bookmark for Brides

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Mon, Feb 16, 2009 at 9:34 AM

Another bridal event is coming down the pipes, this one geared toward the bride wanting to make her wedding as green as possible. It makes sense, then, that the featured dress designer is Frocky Jack Morgan, by Portland resident Julia Barbee, who has emblazoned the home page of her web site with an amusing quote from another local designer, Adam Arnold: "Now she's sustainable. She makes cool dresses out of, like, garbage or something!" To clarify, "garbage" is reams of gossamer, deconstructed couture and other lovely vintage bits revamped into dreamily romantic pieces, all one of a kind, and worthy of lust with or without a concern for the environment. These are to be featured at Olio United's First Friday in March (the 6th, from 5-8 pm). Joining her designs will be other businesses flaunting their greenery, like: Bakery Bar, Alma Chocolate, and SJ Harmon Photography.

So you see why "garbage" doesn't quite capture it.

Be Your Own Valentine at Lille

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Thu, Feb 12, 2009 at 1:48 PM

Here's one for the single woman staring down the barrel of "singles awareness day," or for the non-single ladies out there who just happen to buy their own lingerie (it's probably for the better that way anyway, don't you think?): Lille Boutique (1007 E Burnside) has been selected as one of 20 best lingerie stores nationwide to host the release of Getting Naked Again: Dating, Romance, Sex, and Love When You've Been Divorced, Widowed, Dumped, or Distracted by Judith Sills, clinical psychologist and New York Times bestselling author (Tomorrow, 6-9 pm). I know—even though I secretly harbor what's probably an unhealthy fascination with self-help books, that in and of itself would be kind of a whatever, except that it's Lille's gig, and they always make it worthwhile. How? With lingerie models, of course, wearing the store's latest acquisitions from Araks, Wundervoll (recently featured in the NYT style section, BTW), Keep Me, Matters of Leisure, and Stella McCartney. Additionally, you can sample wine from Duck Pond Cellars and vegan truffles from Missionary Chocolates, and check out jewelry from Sahlia Michelle Jewelry.

AND! If you buy the book or make a purchase of $25 or more, you can be entered to win one of the following giveaways:

Lille: Vintage French Silk Stockings and Garter Belt, $80 value
Duck Pond: 1.5L Magnum of Merlot, $75 value
Noble Rot: 2 Wine Flights and 4 Menu Items, $75 value
Lille: Cote Bastide Bath Gift Set, $68 value
Sahlia Michelle Jewelry: Sterling Silver Pounded Ring Necklace, $62 value
Missionary Chocolates: 9 pc. Assorted Truffle Box, $30 value
Lille: $25 Gift Certificate

Lille is also giving away a copy of the book in the drawing, to be held at 8 pm (you must be present to win). While you're waiting and hoping your magic number gets called, check out the boudoir portraits by sometimes Portlander, sometimes New Yorker Marne Lucas, up through the end of the month. Lucas is a pro at bringing out the beauty in women, and her work features lots of Portland women, perhaps even someone you know, rather than professional models. If you ever have want or cause for sexy photos of yourself, she's the woman you need to call.

Sameunderneath, LFI, & Seven Planet

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Tue, Feb 10, 2009 at 3:17 PM

As reported late last month, Sameunderneath as we knew it is no longer, with the exit of founder Ryan Christensen, the announcement of the NW 23rd location's closure, and the purchase of the company by a new local brand, LFI (Love, Faith, and Influence). Founded by former Sameunderneath national sales manager Summer Widmer, LFI is more or less tabling operations at Sameunderneath, with hopes for a re-launch of the brand in the future. Instead, they are currently focusing on the development of LFI, a line of streetwear that doesn't sound too dissimilar from the Sameunderneath design concept (hoodies, eco-friendly tees, bomber jackets). But there are notable differences, such as the fact that LFI is particularly geared to women, with a target age group of 25-35, and unlike Sameunderneath, which caught criticism for producing overseas, the plan is for LFI to be produced in the US, probably in California and possibly Oregon as well. Unfortunately, they don't have anything to show us yet in terms of design, but I'll be sure to post images as soon as I've got 'em.

In the meantime, get ready for changes at the N Mississippi store too, as it also ceases to be a Sameunderneath retail location. According to LFI's DJ Widmer, next month it will become Seven Planet, which bills itself as a "the world's first green general store." There is currently only one physical location, in Sandpoint, Idaho, although you can also shop online—a quick browse through is kind of underwhelming, but the concept has potential. Its shopping categories include apparel (including Sameunderneath, to be joined by LFI), energy (empty, but I'm hoping for a wide selection of energy efficient light bulbs and batteries), food (think snacks, not groceries), health (think mineral makeup), household (incense, soap, etc), shelter (another empty category, but I'm guessing furniture), and travel, which has one item: membership in Better World Club, the environmentally friendly alternative to AAA. I have a message out to get more info on the new arrival, including a more precise opening date, but in the meantime, has anyone here been to the original Idaho location? Is it awesome? Is it lame?

Less Problems, More Solutions

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Tue, Feb 10, 2009 at 9:20 AM

The fine minds over at OFFICE PDX (2204 NE Alberta) are putting together a discussion panel on Innovation During A Recession, featuring some people you might want to beg for a job network with: Michael Shea, creative director of Nike; Nicholas Weigel, director of Laika/house (fresh off what's looking like a successful Coraline debut); and Jeff Kovel, founder of Skylab Architecture. The moderated discussion should cover how the recession will affect each company externally as well as internally, including budgetary and hiring issues, what's being done differently in each industry to keep clients and team members happy. I don't know about you, but the lamentations and beating of breasts about the economy are getting pretty effing old. I'm ready to hear ideas for solutions, and see some action. The panel takes place at the store on Thursday from 6-8 pm, and is free and open to the public. OFFICE is also offering a 15% off promotion on Pina Zangaro Portfolio Covers that coincides with the event.

Fashion News?

Holler!

M.I.A. is just as crazy as ever. But that's ok because that's why we like her. She showed up to the Grammy's last night in a dress designed by Indian designer Manish Arora and matching (debatable) "trainers." She's got a bun in the oven that's about to pop, and should it happen while wearing the dress the child may be born thinking the whole world looks like a kaleidoscope.

NFL athlete new Elle intern? Yes, it's true. Stew Bradley, a Philadelphia Eagles linebacker, started last week at Elle as an intern working under creative director Joe Zee. Apparently he's really into fashion and "wanted to do something different this season." The NFL off season that is. He's already been working on photo shoots and may be attending New York Fashion Week. Meanwhile, the first week at my internship...I blogged about this man. Glory.

Michelle Obama is very fashionable. Perhaps not the freshest news on the fashion circuit, but I was shocked to see a huge spread on her style on the NY Times website. Mrs. Obama single handedly made designer Jason Wu famous on inauguration day when she, to his surprise, stepped out in the gown he had designed and submitted to her last November. Now he's set to make $5 million this year. GoBama!

DOLCE AND GABBANA dressed as priests in Rome ? What a sight! The designers are making a cameo appearance as priests in the musical film Nine due in theaters in November.

Gilt Group Invitation.

Posted by Molly "The Intern" Georgetta on Mon, Feb 9, 2009 at 3:20 PM

A few months ago a friend invited me to join Gilt Group . It's a members-only online retailer that features men's and women's luxury brands at sale prices of up to 70% off. Pretty much, it's a Nordstrom or Saks shoppers wet dream.

So, how it works is a selection of goods from a certain brand or designer will be on sale for 36 hours. Everything is first-come first-served as soon as the sale starts, and things sell out fast! Should what you want sell out you can be put on a wait list, but best of luck to you. You're bound to shop compulsively when a Marc by Marc Jacobs dress is staring you in the face for 70% off retail, but buyer beware, only a few things are exchangeable!

Current sales are:
IPPOLITA
Earnest Sewn Men's
Nina Ricci
Mary Norton
Marc By Marc Jacobs Men's

Upcoming sales include:
Jack Spade
Delman
Walter
John Varvatos Shoes & Accessories

Since it's invitation only, it's a hard circle to get your foot into. However, us members get to invite whomever we choose, so I'm inviting all of our lovely readers! Happy early Valentines Day! Once you click here and fill out a few things you'll be all set to go further into debt, while looking fabulous. You can't say I never did anything for you, Portland. This is no scam and your info wont be pawned off to porn sites and other oddities to spam your inbox. But you will get about 2 e-mails a day telling you about what sales are starting and ending.

This is the biggest thing to happen to discount clothing since eBay. Once you're a member you too can spread the love and invite your pesky coworker and mother-in-law; they wont be able to say you never gave them anything.
