Portland Sewing

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Thu, Mar 18, 2010 at 9:47 AM

The last time I took a formal sewing class, I had to truck out to 82nd avenue on the MAX, but as of April 4, Portlanders will have access to a range of sewing and fashion design classes in the conveniently central Hollywood District: Portland Sewing is the new venture of Sharon Blair, who you may already know through her line of clothing, Studio SKB. It will offer a wide range of beginning to intermediate sewing classes, plus classes on the apparel business, fashion design, sketching, and more. The opening party is on the 4th from 3-5 pm (snacks, demos, tours), but you can get a jump the day prior with a seminar on starting an apparel business (more info here). The school will also have its own fabric store, and taking advantage of the teller window of the building, a former credit union, they will have a drive-thru notions window, selling zippers and thread and such for sewers who are in an insane hurry.

I'll be headed down to preview the facilities in a couple weeks, but until then peruse the class offerings if you're thinking of sticking a toe (or adding some polish) into the world of apparel-making—registration is open now.

They even offer a class in which you make your own Chanel knock-off jacket... make one for me too!
