Natural Beauty Aid: The Lemon

Posted by Elizabeth Mollo on Fri, Apr 6, 2012 at 8:59 AM

Spring is here, the time of year for regrowth and renewal, and it’s time to get our bodies and skin looking fresh and healthy with the help of a little yellow fruit. While you may think lemons are just useful for lemonade and a garnish for your cocktail, they are actually super good for you. Consumed and used on the skin, lemon juice can do wonders for your health and appearance.

Drinking warm water and lemon juice each morning will give your body a jump start by re-hydrating you and flushing out toxins in your system. It will also restore your body’s PH balance if your body is overly acidic. Lemon juice is also great applied directly onto skin. It is a 100% natural and cheap alternative to expensive beauty products. Here are a couple of ways to use it:

-Dip a cotton ball into some lemon juice and apply to your face before going to bed. Wash off the next morning. After a few nights of this, your skin will be glowing as the citric acid helps to exfoliate the skin, clearing away dead, dull cells to reveal new ones.

-Slice a lemon in half and dip it in sugar. Scrub (gently!) all over body and face. This will have an even greater exfoliating effect than just using lemon juice alone. It should only be done once or twice a week on the face, however, since the skin there is more delicate and could become irritated.

And of course do not do either of these things after shaving or waxing or on/near an open wound, because it will sting like a mother!

As stated, lemons are also very useful in cocktails. I've recently been ordering vodka with lots of muddled lemon and a splash of soda water. This is a great alternative to the sugary juices that accompany most cocktails, and less sugar means less hangover—we all know hangovers are not pretty.
