While on a recent trip to the Bay Area I was lucky enough to spend some time at The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. This is the first ever exhibition featuring Gaultier's work and contains several rooms displaying 140 designs created between the mid-1970s and 2010, along with sketches, photographs, and video clips that spotlight Gaultier’s collaborations with filmmakers, choreographers, and musicians. It also features 30 (creepy) animated mannequins that talk and sing. Ever been to the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland where the pictures seem to be looking at you as you walk past? Well, this is even crazier than that, and the whole exhibit seemed to be a kind of sartorial, x-rated version of the Haunted Mansion, complete with a male animated mannequin carrying on a conversation with another male animated mannequin in a mirror. Kind of hard to explain that one, hopefully the picture below will give you a better idea. This exhibit will be on display until August 19th, so if you are in that area I highly suggest checking it out.
