Project Nunway

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Wed, May 30, 2012 at 9:59 AM

No, that's not a typo on a post about the next burgeoning Portland designer to be sucked up into the reality TV vortex (though little birds have hinted there's a strong possibility that I will be writing such a post again later this year). But for now we're talking about Project Nunway, a different beast entirely. On Saturday, June 9, the Quest Center for Integrative Health is holding Wonder Quest, a fundraiser for the non-profit, which serves the health needs of "all people including the HIV/AIDS community, LGBTQ community, and people who are low-income, uninsured, or underinsured." Honorarily co-chaired by Secretary of State Kate Brown and Newly Elected City Councilman Steve Novick, the evening will feature "hosted bar, hearty hors d’oeuvres, desserts, silent and live auctions," as well as Nunway, the entertainment centerpiece of the night. Brainchild of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence—you know, the extreme-drag performance "nuns"—Project Nunway goes like this: "The Sisters have been paired with Portland fashion designers to develop over-the-top looks from recycled materials based on the theme 'Welcome to the Jungle.' The budget is $100 per creation." Aaand, you can probably guess who the models are.

For fans of the actual TV show, there's a big bonus, too: The headlining designers are Portland Project alum Bryce Black, as well as Project Runway Allstars winner (and former Gretchen Jones challenger) Mondo Guerra, who famously came out as HIV positive in an accidentally authentic and touching episode of PR. Tickets are $75 and $100 at the door, but dig deep, because Quest is a cause worthy of support and besides: "hosted bar."
