Summer is almost here, and that means farmer's markets, sun, and dehydration! Luckily a staple of these farmer's markets are locally grown cucumbers. Super hydrating, the cucumber has a water content of about 90% and is also packed with vitamin C and fiber, which means inside and out your body will love them on those hot summer days in salads and applied in various ways onto your skin. Here are a few ways to keep yourself cool and beautiful in the coming months:

Cucumber Astringent: Juice half a cucumber (either with a juicer or use a blender and strain away the solids.) Apply with a cotton ball. This will keep your skin shine free.

Cucumber Toner: Mix 1/4 cup fresh cucumber juice, 2 tablespoons witch hazel, 2 tablespoons water, and 1 tablespoon vodka (optional.) A fancier version of the recipe above, it provides the same effects and also helps to tighten pores and relieve mildly sunburned skin. Source: Natural Beauty at Home

Cucumber-Avocado Facial Mask: Place 1/2 cup coarsely chopped peeled cucumber, 1/2 cup coarsely chopped peeled avocado, 1 egg white, and 2 teaspoons powdered milk in a blender and blend until smooth. Refrigerate for 30 minutes and apply to face and neck. Leave on for 30 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Splash cool water after that and gently pat dry. This mask nourishes, tightens pores, and helps slough off dead skin cells to reveal fresher skin. Source: care2.com

Straight Cucumber Mask: Grate a cucumber and apply to your face/skin. This is great for sunburns.

Cucumber Body Pizza: Yes, it is exactly what you think. Grab a friend and try this to ease that sunburn after a long day of PBR drinkin' and river floatin'.

The last DIY remedy is a variation of the tried and true cucumber-on-the-eyes thing that I invented not too long ago when I overindulged the night before:

Elizabeth's Hangover Helper: Start with a make-up free face (shame on you for not washing your face before you passed out!) Grab a big glass of coconut water and two cold slices of cucumber. Relax for about 15 minutes and try to remember/forget all the stupid shit you did the night before. After this, flip the cucumber slices over and rub all over your face, this will feel amazing and refreshing. Let the cucumber juice dry, then moisterize the hell out of your skin (or take a shower and then moisterize.) This little ritual will make you feel fresh (or a little less like garbage) and help replenish some of your body's water that you replaced with alcohol the night before.
