Attention emerging designers: Now's your chance to apply to participate in Portland Catapult, the competition that's helped launch the careers of a roster of designers including Ms. Wood, Amanda Grisham and Lizz Basinger. You can do so at PortlandCatapult@gmail.com, by sending photos of at least eight looks from your latest collection, with the subject line "Application."
If you've been following Portland Fashion Week's evolution into FASHIONxt, you've probably noticed that the Catapult segment, which some (me, for instance) would argue was always the most interesting and locally relevant part of the week, was cut from the lineup's new format, which seems to place increasing emphasis on showcasing Project Runway alumni, and less on truly representing the local fashion industry. Fortunately, Nancy L. Simon of Get Sushi Designs did not want to let this invaluable platform for new designers die, and instead decided to turn it into a stand alone event, with a bigger and better prize package than ever before. The winner will receive the services of professional photographers and models to put on an editorial-style photo shoot, a graphic designer who will work with the designer to create a logo and branding tools, a web designer who will build the designer's site, and an intellectual property specialist who will meet with the designer to discuss the necessities and pitfalls of protecting one's ideas. In addition, Simon adds that they have local boutiques lined up to feature the work of the winner and runners up in special trunk shows.
The show will be held at the Left Bank Annex on November 9th, and tickets will go on sale November 1st. You can stay updated on the event by following them on Twitter, or by visiting their Facebook page.
