50 Shades of Grey Gardens

Posted by Rose Finn on Fri, Oct 26, 2012 at 8:59 AM

When I hear the name "Grey Gardens," I think of an abandoned attempt at horticulture, or a less-popular convalescent home. But, of course, it's actually a 1975 documentary about the lives of a mother-daughter combo that watched their riches turn to rags (think: The Kardashians meet Hoarders).

"Little" Edie Beale was a socialite, model, and cabaret performer, who grew up in a mansion named "Grey Gardens," overlooking some fruity place called "The Hamptons." After her father left her mother, the two were left to fend for themselves, facing poverty and upwards of 300 cats. Amidst their decay, strife, and one too many cans of cat food, Edie danced around Grey Gardens in heels, swathing her head in towels, shirts, and scarves. Edie's character and style has maintained a lasting impact over the years; to this day she is loved and written about all over the media, from Jezebel to The Guardian. Even Calvin Klein has deemed her as one of his main influences (though we hope she's not to blame for the mom jeans).

On November 7th, Clinton Street Theater will be celebrating Little Edie's 95th birthday party with two screenings of Grey Gardens. Complete with cake, wine, and hors d'oeuvres, Clinton Street also encourages costumes, and in their typical "fashion" (*cough*cough*), will award prizes as they see "fit" (*ouch*).
