The kitchen can be a scary place. Stacks of cluttered dishware, piles of mystery food in the refrigerator: many Portlanders suffer these afflictions on a daily basis.

Fortunately, the smart ladies behind Brightdesign Lab are armed with a plethora of solutions for you kitchen woes and, this Saturday, the design duo will host a FREE workshop in their Pearl District Studio.

Earlier today I sat down in my kitchen to ask designer Leela a few questions about the event. Needless to say, I will be in attendance.

Leela acknowledges that "Portland has a wide variety of spaces" and the workshop presents 5 different case studies. Each addresses the different demands of Portland spaces pose, from large craftsman style homes to studio-dwellers.

Each presentation is designed around the 5 kitchen fundamentals and how these workzones interact:
cooking prep
eating
storage
display
cleaning

Thus, Brightdesign has created functional relationships between these zones. Dishware is efficiently organized near the cleaning area, which is in close proximity to the prep area. Honestly, we all spend a ton of time in our kitchens so streamlining it makes sense.

And, of course, I can't leave out the display component. With 20 years of design experience in their pockets, Leela and Alissa make kitchens look really, really good. See for yourself this Saturday from 10 to 4 at 404 NW 10th Ave.
