Ladies Day Out Re-Cap

Posted by Elizabeth Mollo on Wed, Jul 3, 2013 at 8:59 AM

Last Sunday I attended Portland's Annual Ladies Day Out, a weekend-long event at the Oregon Convention Center. It featured booths from various kinds of businesses including wineries and breweries, salons and day spas, apparel and accessories and, probably the most popular one, Hannah the Pet Society, with its real live puppies and kittens that were available for adoption or just to play with. The event also featured workshops and two fashion shows on Saturday and Sunday. While I did not see any of the workshops, I did see both fashion shows, which showcased small selections from Portland boutiques.

The first one was produced by Kerry Yu and featured her line, O' Pearl Jewelry, along with looks from Silkwood Boutique and Betty Jean Couture:

Included in this segment was the latest collection from Moontess, which featured some very fun 4th of July swimwear pieces, as well as her signature brown, blue, and printed pieces that are available in many different cuts that will flatter any woman, no matter her shape or modesty level. The highlight of this segment has to go to the childrenswear suits and the tiny girl holding the huge beach ball, which she then tried to throw. (All photo credit for the rest of the photos in this piece goes to Photography Sponsored by Moontess.)

The second fashion show was produced by Mag-Big and Union Rose and featured looks from 9 designers, including lines made by the shop's owners.

For this being their first year, I thought the event on a whole was pretty good, and the fashion shows were great because they showcased a variety of simple, accessible clothing suitable for a wide range of women, which is what I think women want to see when they attend an event like this. I should add that it was not as well attended as I thought it would be, which may have to do with the venue (I personally don't really like attending events at the Oregon Convention Center, and I think others feel the same way). Event organizer Thalia Cabrera informed me that the next Ladies Day Out will be a holiday edition and is scheduled for December 7th. While most details are TBD it will go down to just a one day event with a VIP reception the night before, and it will not be held at the OCC. I think planning a holiday event is a smart move, since people seem to love events with tons of different retailers to aid in minimizing time spent holiday shopping. All in all a good start, and I look forward to seeing how the event grows.
