Retrash: A Concept & A Book

Posted by Katie Guinn on Tue, Apr 22, 2014 at 9:59 AM

First of all, we'd like to say Happy Earth Day! As Portland citizens, we are most of us strong advocates for recycling, upcycling, re-purposing, and all that parallels the idea of reducing the amount of trash we as humans create. Designers in particular have had a heavy hand in the concept of making some cool ass shit out of materials from a dumpster, garbage, or landfill. There is a new book that was compiled by Nathan Devine, founder of Retrash. The book, also called Retrash, highlights 82 designers from 20 countries globally who have created objects like clothing, bags, house wares and home decor with materials that others have thrown away.

"The project aims to build a global community of individuals that make things out of trash."The first objective is to promote the growing movement of artists using materials which are considered waste in our society. Retrash aims to inspire others to purchase these original works as opposed to mass produced products made from virgin materials." Says Nathan.

The second objective, he says, is to reduce the amount of landfill. A small batch of the books have been published already, but Nathan is asking for public funding to get 1,000 more copies made, and they will of course be printed on 100% recycled paper. Today, in celebration of Earth Day, is the official launch of a Kickstarter campaign to get the 150 page book printed. You can also follow up on the Retrash website or like their Facebook page. If you do like the Facebook page, you will also be entered to win one of 5 copies of the book. Retrash will available in print and digital form (Epub & Mobi). Oh, and please try not to step on any bugs today.
