Labor Day is the perfect time to discuss my new favorite label, Dunderdon. Although it was created by a Swedish carpenter for builders and craftsmen, the clean lines, utilitarian fabrics and simple details make it universally wearable. These are clothes than effortlessly transition between bike and work, going out and camping.
Plus, most of the pieces are reasonably priced!
Frances May has carried the line since opening last year. For fall, they'll have several of the best pieces for men and women, including my favorite jacket.
If you want to check out the line before that, Local35 will be hosting a pop-up store dedicated entirely to Dunderdon. It'll be upstairs from their location on Hawthorne and 35th from Sept. 9 to 16th.
Forgive the blurry photo.

There is NO WAY I am wearing my stupid rain pants today, I don't care how much water is coming from the sky. It's August!
I'll just deal with wet pants.
That's not an okay strategy for a daily bike commuter during the long rainy winter...but I can't bear to put on the rain pants ever again!
Here's my NEW strategy.
On top: the killer red anorak from the Stand-Up Comedy/Slow and Steady Wins the Race collaboration. It's long enough to cover my thighs. If you like it call Stand Up Comedy and get on the wait list—I'm on it already.

On bottom: the Swims I bought last year at Winn Perry—galoshes that fit over your shoes and pants, up to mid-calf. They'll have them again this year, but get yours early because they sell out.

I realize this strategy will leave some pant leg exposed. So maybe...
Hunter boots, ala Kate Moss circa 2005, sold this year at Parallel.

I'm going to make it happen. I am not wearing rain pants ever again!

Maybe it's because Oregon turns 150 this year and Pendleton turns 100...but I've been on the lookout for vintage Pendleton field shirts all summer. You know the style: wool plaid, two buttoned breast pockets. They're what your grandpa wore to the cabin in the 1950s.
It seemed like a fruitless pursuit until I visited Winn Perry.
Well, they've got about ten vintage shirts that match my description—for only $30 each. How often do you ask for something and then get it? This is going to be a good year.
I know we've got two good months of summer left (if I get what I ask for), but the selection is pretty choice. Go and check them out before they sell out.

The selection at Winn Perry

Chelsea Erhart's Erhart streetwear line will be the featured apparel work at the August installment of Radish Underground's First Thursday shindig (that would be this Thursday, Aug 6), noted as much for having the most-bomb snacks as well as über-dedication to designers of the region. Erhart's new collection drops at Radish and elsewhere on the 15th, so it is something of a preview of that, with particular attention to painted tees and and sweatshirts, including some one-off collabs with someone she will only describe as "one of the coolest kids with cans in the city." Mmmhmmm... Chelsea further explains:

I originaly designed these tees when I was moving from Tennessee to Idaho, and wanted to make tee shirts for all of my friends. I discovered that 'tie dying' with spray paint looks pretty cool. My bff from highschool has always pushed for me to reproduce these, and now is the time. They, along with my signature sweatshirts are my best sellers of the collection.

Of which she speaks:

Hit up the party from 5-9 pm at the store, and hit the jump for preview images of the forthcoming fall collection.

Better than a tee shirt in this heat? A short sleeve button down. Unbutton it when it's really unbearable and get extra air circulation!
Plus, in fall you can layer up with a tee and nice cardigan. Really, they're just more practical than long sleeve shirts. Unfortunately, finding one that fits nice and slim is more difficult than it should be.
Lucky for us, Duchess just whipped up a batch of nifty, sharp little short sleeve shirts for Winn Perry. They are indeed slim, but not tight, and with Duchess' quality tailoring, classic. Very much worth the investment.
Check them out only at Winn Perry!

I've been complaining pretty much non-stop about my search for summer footwear. It's a well-known fact that men's sandals are uniformly ugly. I like my Converse and Vans, but I feel like I should move on. So what's hot-weather friendly and, according to the New York Times, totally NOW?
Men's Espadrille's. Nationale has a bunch and I hear they're pretty inexpensive. I'm on the fence. They seem like something the very tan gay couple who lived across the street from me when I was a kid in Florida and had a parrot and a lot of wicker furniture would wear. But maybe that's a good thing? What do you all think?

I'm totally excited about it, make sure to check it out!
One thing I didn't get to mention (so many things, so little space) is swimwear. In my extensive research for the column (umm...shopping) I found a bumper crop of great styles, all at Local 35.
Owner Justin Machus said he's never carried so many swimsuits; this season he just kept finding pieces he couldn't pass up.
They've all got an early-80s trunk kind of feel—mid-thigh, sleek, so much cooler (and more comfortable) than the baggy board shorts you'll find at the mall.
A pair from Modern Amusement:

My favorite mens-only boutique in the city, Winn Perry, is having a memorial day sale. Today and tomorrow only, save 25% on any one clothing or shaving item! Mention this promotion to get the discount.
It's the perfect opportunity to take a chance on an interesting piece, something you might not normally buy. Like this madras jacket from What Comes Around Goes Around! Usually you see madras in bright, garish colors best suited for the golf course. This subdued palette is a lot more versatile, but still has a ton of personality. It also comes in pants and a vest, but please don't wear them all at the same time.

I love a sale at the beginning of the season. What, you mean I can actually wear something that's marked down? Like, today?
You could wear this dress over the weekend:

Or this jacket on any of the chilly nights to come:

They're both from Lindsey Reif's Reif Haus collection, and until May 31st you can take 15% off her already affordable prices (the dress is $79, the jacket $130 regularly) on her Etsy site.
Check it out!

Let's get this straight, I don't discriminate between Portland demin shops. I love Nolita and Blake, but Local35 is where my favorite jeans are from and the store in town all my guy friends go to get their fancy denim.

The owner, Justin, just posted these photos on the Local35 blog. They're his 6 month old APC New Cure jeans compared to a new pair of the same jean. I was diggin' the way they've faded so I thought I'd pass these on.

They've just gotten a lot of new merchandice in from PF Flyers, Modern Amusement, Wrath Arcane, Insight, and In God We Trust so head in there.

Pieces run the gamut from men's tees and cardigans to women's dresses and tunics, all of which are hand painted.
When I asked my guy friends what they liked about the Forecast show, nearly every one mentioned the high-waisted suspender pants from John Blasioli.

I completely understand, they're clean yet creative, stand out on a runway but look wearable. What spoke to me me backstage, though, (a pretty big feat considering how much was going on) was this soft wool topcoat. The detail is simple and beautifully done.

I'm really excited about this collection (as well as the other new menswear lines that showed at Forecast, Smith & Bybee, Hunt & Gather, La Merde and jury-selected Adam Andreas) but since John shut down his former label / storefront A Broken Spoke a few months ago, I had no idea where to buy. John's answers, a little more about this colleciton, detail shots and how Young Guns2 figures into everything after the jump.

I've recently warmed to the idea of wearing a suit. The kind of two button, slim cut suit Paul Newman would have worn in the 60s.
Finding this style, however, has been a bit...challenging. Last week, I asked the people at three of my favorite vintage shops for guidance. If you're in the market for a suit with style (and don't have the cash for a custom-made Adam Arnold or Duchess suit) check out the tips below.

Avalon Antiques & Vintage Clothes
Unlike most Portland vintage stores, Avalon has a pretty tight focus on formal wear. Owner Simon Cheesman advises trying on suits all over your size range (two sizes above and below your normal jacket size). Look for fit in the shoulders and length—everything else can be tailored. To make it easy, they have a tailor on site every Thursday and Friday. Don't be afraid to ask which suits can be tailored to fit you!

Keep 'Em Flying
What this tiny store on West 21st lacks in volume, it makes up for in quality. Every suit is stylish and in great shape. Employee Alicia Justus suggests coming in regularly, as stock is updated every day. Apparently I just missed out on a YSL jacket and vest, which was sold hours after it hit the floor. Bummer.

Hollywood Vintage
With possibly the largest suit collection in the city, Hollywood Vintage can be a little daunting. According to employee Rodney Bender, suits are arranged by era, so If you're looking for a particular cut, research the period before you shop. Otherwise, you're going to have to do a lot of digging.

I loved the slouchy, wrinkled jackets, skinny pants and floppy hats. So many elements I'd like to incorporate into my wardrobe.
One thing I'm on the fence about are the liberty print shirts. In the early 90s I went through a tiny floral print phase. I didn't think I would want to revisit that trend, but...

Like Marjorie I want to reinvent myself for the Obama years. The first thing I'm going to do? Get rid of my hoodie. Well...maybe gradually phase it out, as, like 90 percent of Portland men, I'm kind of attached to it.
The reason we love our hoodies? They're practical, the perfect layering piece for our fluctuating weather. I have mine on me at all times--under a jacket, over a tee shirt, in my bag ready to ward off errant chills.
My grandma had her shawl, I've got my hoodie.
So what could possibly replace our collective security blanket?
I nominate the cardigan. It's versatile and warm, but a lot more polished.
Perfect for The New America.
Check out these options.

More on men's jackets... Now that the weather has irrefutably turned to chill, it will all too quickly become apparent whether or not your fall wardrobe is adequate to withstand the season (there's a spread in the new Vogue about how global warming has influenced designers to produce their fall styles in lighter fabrics. I am not feeling that at all, gimme warm!). I think it's safe to say that since last year there are more interesting options for Portland men than there were in '07. Brett mentioned some good waterproof jacket options previously, but I'd like to call attention to another option with unique design elements, which are designed in Portland (yay!) but made in China (oh...). That would be La Merde, the work of No Star's Erik Prowell, who, along with partner Josh Hindson, designs jackets that crisscross the borders between hoodie, blazer, and cargo to make something that's both interesting and utilitarian. They run from $180-260, and you can find them at Frank James (729 E Burnside #103), Lizard Lounge (1323 NW Irving), and Chapter Four (4705 N Albina).

Last year, my first in Portland, I bought a very uncool North Face jacket. I was determined to bike everywhere and needed something practical, sporty and, most importantly, rain proof.
I felt like crap every time I put it on.
This year I was determined to find something a little bit more fashionable. My first find: this great Spiewak jacket at Local 35. Love that it's fitted. Love that it has a tiny gray herringbone print. Love the buttoned pockets.

Spiewak, $140 at Local 35

My second find is a more suited to strolling than cycling. Still, this Trovata wax-coated trench repels rain and looks very sharp. Get it at Parallel Boutique.
<img class="blogImageCenter" src="http://www.portlandmercury.com/images/blogimages/2008/10/14/r_1224024146_navy_trench.jpg" alt="navy_trench.jpg" /
Trovata, $374 at Parallel Boutique

Lastly, Lizard Lounge has three different jackets from Scapegoat. They're as technical as my horrible North Face jacket, but in a slim silhouette that's lot closer to cool. These jackets are on the warm side, worth it if you're going to be biking all winter and still want to keep a measure of style.

Scapegoat, from a selection at Lizard Lounge

If you're a regular reader of this blog, you've seen me gush over the glory that is Winn Perry--a men's emporium that recalls the era before the common American man's wardrobe defaulted to slovenly. It makes me want to get all Victor Victoria in there, so beautiful are the array of masculine accoutrement. If you have yet to visit the newly minted store, the coming grand opening celebration is this Friday evening, and in addition to the typical wine and munchies affair, will feature live music and readings from original works: Lord Breaulove Swells Whimsy's "The Affected Provincial's Companion, Vol. 1" and A. Gustav Bayer's "Minutiae of Black Tie Etiquette". Oh, boy! It all goes down at "7 o'clock Post Meridian" (too much?) and in what may very likely be a first for a Portland store event, ties are recommended.
