Mercy Studios (537 SE Ash #25) is the new, communal 2,000sf studio of Andy Lifschutz, Janeane Marie, and Nialls Fallon, jewelry designer, apparel designer, and artist respectively. This Friday, starting at 6 pm, they're breaking in the space with a grand opening party, "Experiement No. 1," and I'm already looking forward to "Experiment No. 2" because A) I will be out of town on Friday and B) they are pulling no punches here: Lifschutz, who I met for the first time at Content, is supremely talented—he has just been asked to participated in Berlin Fashion Week, so you might want to pick some of his work up at Local35 before he blows up and out of your price range. Or better yet, he'll be selling at Friday's party at 25% off. And, if you haven't familiarized yourself with Janeane Marie, she is one of the most rapidly rising stars on Portland's apparel scene (you could get me her "gravity dress" for Christmas if you want). Fallon, meanwhile, is a gifted photographer who has shot everything from warm portraits of pretty girls in bed to stark documentation of Hurricane Katrina. If that's not enough they've also hooked up live painters and modern dancers, music starting at 10 pm from DJ Hanukkah Miracle and Doctor Adam, food from Clyde Common and Olympic Provisions, and lots of donated drink-ables. Please go and enjoy it on my behalf.

Not that I feel a lack of a social networking presence in my daily life, but I've just done it again. I created another online profile. It's on a new web site called Birds of A Feather, founded by the awesome Portland jewelry designer Jesseca McCloskey of Paper Treasure with PDX web designers Input vs. Output. From the "About" page:

Birds of A Feather is a new online community where Portland fashion designers can gather, meet, and share their work and ideas. This is a newborn project and is still very much a blank canvas. There is amazing potential for how the site can be used, both individually and collectively... This site is intended for the broad range of folks who are involved in the local fashion scene; from the Portland boutiques who support local makers to the apparel and accessory designers, stylists, models and photographers... Users will be able to create profiles with images and biographies, post blogs and comments, list or check upcoming events in the calendar …etc.! This is a space where you might find others interested in collaborative projects or find fashion-related job opportunities for pay or trade. Here you can discuss craft or business matters, network and promote!

Designers who've already joined include Adam Arnold, who through sheer alphabetical advantage has made it so that this awesome photo jumps out from the top of the "designers" page:

Awesome.

Anyhow, he is joined by Sword + Fern, Emily Katz, and Frocky Jack Morgan, among others. The boutique section so far includes Flutter and Narcisse, and you'll find me under "resources" along with Input vs. Output and Brian Stevenson Photography. That's a decent start, but there are still plenty of tumbleweeds over there. If you're involved in the local industry (and haven't yet reached critical mass tending to your various online communities), come on over and sign up. Let's try to make this interesting.

Not to keep harping on how awesome Content was (but it was), but one of my favorite rooms at the event was Luxury Jones'. In it, two films were projected simultaneously on the wall of the room, together the collective tale of a wild night out with lots of costume changes (all Luxury Jones' hot-ass party clothes). If you missed it, regular Mercury photo contributor Minh Tran, who shot the films (called "Heavy Syrup") and even composed and performed the original score with Vera Domini, has unleashed them online. You can watch them separately but to get the full effect, here are his playback instructions:

1. Depending on the resolution of your monitor, you’ll see the two videos side by side (which is ideal) or on top of each other (which is a bit of a bummer but not the biggest of deals).

2. Completely mute the volume on one of the videos - the audio is identical on both so you won’t be missing out. If you want to see each of the videos individually in full screen, return the volume to normal levels for the one you muted (obviously). Depending on your internet connection and the processing capabilities of your computer, you may have to watch these videos independently for smooth playback. We tried our best to make each of the videos entertaining on their own.

3. Press play on one video and then as quickly as possible press play on the other video. Then go back to the first video and pause it for a split second to compensate for the difference in start times.

4. When the opening sequences start up, the videos should be identical, pause and unpause accordingly to get them synchronized as closely as possible. You should be all set after this.

Plazm's ongoing limited t-shirt of the moth club's latest design is up for purchase. This time Sarah Gottesdiener AKA Sarah Faith (Gottesdiener) has ponied up with a design in reference to Sol LeWitt and the mural she did in the newish Ace Hotel New York:

Today is the day of rest between fashion awesomeness after yesterday's cool-beyond-expectations Content '09 exhibition (wow upon wow) and tomorrow's not-to-be-missed one year anniversary party at Radish Underground. It's hard to believe, and great to know, that of all the shows in the past month there are still some Portland designers that haven't already been seen, but Minor Poet (by Kerry Ann Kimbrell and John Kwon) is one of those few. Tomorrow night at the party, the new Fall 2009 collection will be there in its entirety, along with pieces from other featured designers: Dust, Jayme Hansen, Reif, Studio SKB, Paloma Soledad, Jet Dress, Elyse Bunkers, Layers Squared, Maplexo, Adam Andreas, Aster Park, Gowan Metal, Warley Byrd, Keith McQueen, and Sahlia Michelle.

Monday's Fashion Collective show at the Armory with Fuchsia Lin, Liza Rietz, Emily Ryan, and Idom was the best showing in a week packed with fashion events. If you missed it, don't sleep on the slideshow. A couple clues so you know what you're looking at: Lin's last look is a purple cape—when things go from color to gray you know you've hit Rietz! Ryan's fist look is a shift with an intricate purple panel down the front, and Idom begins with the fuller-figured blond model in the gray dress. Enjoy!

Sustainable Sunday, the final event of Portland Fashion Week, kicked off with Portland-via-NYC .a fortes design. My first impression was burlap sacks with holes cut in them. My second was the same. My third was of burlap sacks with holes cut in them, creatively dyed. Fashion should flatter the form; there is such a thing as too simple. As I was writing down my burlap sack impressions, my female companion leaned over and said "it looks like they're all wearing paper bags."

Second came Mountains of the Moon, a Chicago designer focusing on eco-friendly materials. Bland, hippie fashion. These dresses would be glamorous only on a commune.

Third, and the highlight of the evening, Jonano was doing something the rest of them weren't—making the models look attractive. Using traditional forms with cashmere and organic cotton, the clothing was sexy and feminine—womanly without being girlish. All of these "eco" designers were aware of the granola, nature-loving side to the Pacific Northwest, but Jonano incorporated it without sacrificing their aesthetic.

Which is exactly the problem French designer Ethos Paris had. The first two-thirds of their run were bland earth tones. Eco doesn't have to mean brown and green. And environmental doesn't mean it has to look like it was drug from the forest. The shapes and styles of the clothing worked well, it was the color choices that failed. Sometimes basic is a synonym for boring.

The main event of the evening, Anna Cohen and Imperial Stock Ranch, began with a classroom-style presentation from Jeanne Carver about the inner-workings and history of the ranch. Carver spoke about the progression of the use of livestock in the modern marketplace. "Our challenge was to look creatively at ways to survive," she said. She went on to talk about reducing carbon footprints (hoof prints?) and finding ways to raise livestock in an environmental manner. The message seemed a little lost on the crowd. They began to fidget. One woman left. Another slept. And I watched yet another motion "over my head" to her friend when Carver brought up slow food.

But how were the clothes? The clothes were a little more...inventive. For example, one model came out in what looked to be wool lingerie. Fortunately the point was in finding new ways to develop materials, because some of the designs weren't sustainable in the sense that people could actually wear them.

I'm still picking through the pictures from Friday and Saturday night of Portland Fashion Week, both of which showcased polished, wearable collections from designers—there weren't a ton of "wow" moments, but plenty of solid showings. Here are my favorites from each:

La Vie by Michelle DeCourcy:

DeCourcy's show opened with a number of featherweight sweater pieces in this baby blue that included dresses and tops as well as sweaters. This is the one I wanted to jump into right away.

There were only a couple pieces in this emerald satin but they stood way out in simple cuts.

Jesica Milton:

The Seattle designer showed a number of pieces embellished with this crepe-y, splashy fabric. I think it works best as a shirt... with pants. Add some black stovepipes in there and I'm sold.

WyattOrr:

Another one from Seattle, the first jacket out is my favorite out of the entire collection.

Yes it is weird that this dress has an orange-rimmed hole on the front of it. But I like it.

Idom:

It's difficult to tell in the photo, but this red fabric is awesome, super slick and mean.

The flowers sculpted into the shoulder of this dress are off the hook.

I actually borrowed this very same dress for a photo shoot earlier in the week and adored the fringe-y "fur" skirt. (I'm not alone—this one elicited applause from the audience.)

Amai Unmei:

My favorite dress in a collection that as a whole was a sexier Amai Unmei than the one I've known—good move!

Versatile, go-anywhere top, and I love the pleats peeking from under the lace on the skirt—I'd style it up a bit tougher for my taste, though. Hit the jump to see my picks from Saturday, too!

Mercantile is hosting an event this Friday, Oct. 16, from 4-7 pm, where you can meet Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, the founders of the kind-of-a-big-deal clothing line rag & bone. These stylish designers will be on hand to meet, greet, and sell during the event, and there will be champagne. Enough said.

...But in case that wasn’t enough, there will also be a DJ and you can get $50 off any rag & bone purchase. Okay-enough said. For real.

One of two fantastic events that happened off the official Fashion Week calendar was the awesomely cinematic presentation by Pinkham Millinery. Set in the Lone Fir Cemetery in southeast Portland, "The Procession" was the stuff romantic goths can only dream about. Working in collaboration with fine Portland apparel designers Elizabeth Dye, Jayme Hansen, Kate Towers, Duchess Clothier, Frocky Jack Morgan, MothLove, Emily Ryan, Emily Bixler, Holly Stalder, and Valerie Mathus, milliner Dayna Pinkham created a fantasy tableau for her show-piece hats. Minh Tran took the lovely photos:

Apologies for the delay in my response to Portland Fashion Week, day by day. Regrettably, there is only one of me, and only two fantastic photographers complete with day jobs of their own. All of these are taken by Eliza Sohn, BTW! I'm <del>sorry</del> not sorry for panning day one of Fashion Week, but the good news is that day two—which featured the Emerging Designer Showcase I helped jury as well as capsule collections from Art Institute students—was probably the best night of the week. It's rather unfortunate that it had to be a competition, especially because the designers were so incredibly diverse, but the crowd voted Paloma Soledad the winner of the emerging designers' showcase competition, and I was ultra-pleased: of all the designers who showed collections this week, she was the most theatrical, wow-worthy of them all. With a background in costuming more so than fashion I'm not sure where Soledad is taking her career, but the girl's got talent and charisma, and I want to see more.

More shots of Suzabelle, emerging designers, and Art Institute students after the jump!

Maybe I'm remembering it incorrectly, but this year's venue for Portland Fashion Week, though merely meters away from the site of its 2007 edition in the same Swan Island shipyards, seems like a diminished version of its earlier incarnation—chalk another one up to the Recession. Likewise, the room seemed a little less electrified, and I spied at least one pair of FLIP-FLOPS in attendance. Ugh. Aren't there enough of them on the runway (and does it really be said that if you're modeling in open-toed shoes without a pedicure your toenails should at least be clean? Ugh, again.)? Nonetheless, the disappointment didn't really set in until the runway show was over. There's really no reason to mince words here—most of what was shown was mediocre, and some of it was embarrassing. (I feel better saying so after the improvement of last night.) Gersemi, the Swedish equestrian line—which has plenty of cozy/puffy jackets in its fall collection that appeal to me plenty—went first. It was the same iteration on the standards: riding breetches with sweaters and jackets. But the sicky-sweet pastel palette was, as one person sitting next to me called it, a "boner killer."

Then things really went south. Hit the jump for the gory details.

Last night's first crack at Portland Fashion Week '09 was... something, alright. I'll wait until the photos come in before I expound, but let's just say I hope the worst is over. Tonight's lineup looks like a lot more fun, with sweet looks from Seattle's Suzabelle (a line you may have encountered at Le Train Bleu), fresh looks from young designers representing the Art Institute, as well as the emerging designer showcase (between the two giving us a double dose of one of my favorite local stars, Janeane Marie, participating in both showcases). Ready to see some well executed new ideas!

And so it begins! Tonight Portland Fashion Week kicks off with "Moving Fashion," a night of action-wear from Icebreaker, Defyance, Tony Dimitri, NelliDru Design, and Gersemi. You can read more about it here, but in brief: I like Icebreaker in principle, and their all-wool active-wear is appealing for life and use, but tends to be a bit out of place on the runway. I'm hoping tonight's presentation won't be overly long and that some extra effort will be paid toward making things pop through the styling. I'm anxious to take another look at Defyance, who I first saw at the recent FUSE event. Again I think some of their strongest pieces are quiet, and in terms of first impressions the styling could go either way. Tony Dimitri hasn't thrilled me in the past, and has always struck me as having an LA/Ed Hardy vibe... so obviously I'd like to see a new direction tonight. NelliDru is out of Bend, and the few pieces on the (truly awful) web site look like Clark Kent-for-her suits that are both office-y and athletically tech-y. Regardless they must be seen freed from the confines of that web site (seriously, look at it), which is not doing anybody any favors. I'm perhaps most excited by Gersemi, a Swedish equestrian brand making interesting outdoor-wear that looks pretty damn wearable on or off of a horse (with the exception, perhaps, of the riding breeches). More than anything, though, this is the night where everyone will get to discover what I expect will be another supremely professional production values and a breathtaking venue.

Unlike the majority of what you'll be seeing this week, this show will be showing clothes for right now—fall and winter, that is. Oh the joy of near-instant gratification!: There will be a trunk show at Rietz and Ryan's shared studio/shop at 2305 NW Savier on October 24, 11 am-6 pm, where you can snap up discounted samples from past collections and put your orders in for new pieces from Rietz and Ryan, plus guest-pieces in the shop from Idom for the day.

Last week's China-meets-Portland FUSE show at the Art Museum (scroll down for a complete slideshow, of all these photos by Minh Tran) was a whopper. At $100 for a general admission ticket, those who contributed to this benefit event certainly got their money's worth by measure of quantity. The show itself was split into several sections, with a group of one-off raincoats pulled together by Portlanders. A few of my favorites were the sharp collared specimen by Hillary Day:

and this graceful contribution by Janeane Marie:

Then the show presented full spring collections from some of PDX's choice designers, beginning with May Tee, who has historically been a master of solid, neutral colored, timelessly structured and travel-ready luxury pieces. New elements were at play here with a shot of peach-pink that ran throughout the collection:

and prints in the form of tiny giraffes (I thought they were birds from where I was sitting—I like the giraffes better!):

This was my favorite look, however, which is the May Tee I already know. You could arrive anywhere in the world in this and be perfect:

This dress is an iteration of a design for last season, but I thinks it's poppier and sexier in the new hues:

The finale dress was the one piece that was clearly inspired by the Portland/China collaboration, and it's exquisite—the fabric is to-die-for (attention brides-to-be):

Next up was Emily Katz, who showed some of the shapes she's been playing with in past seasons as well as some new direction. Just about everything looked soft and clean and wearable:

Katz first showed this belly-baring little dress at the Forecast show in April, and I think she was right to keep it in for this year:

Like May Tee, Katz introduced a new pattern. Thumbs up:

It's even better from behind, plus Katz is pretty cute here too:

There's more... so much more. Hit the break for the rest!
