Habitués of Lille Boutique are familiar with Malia Mills, whose remarkably flattering bathing suits were available at the store this past spring and summer. For December's First Friday soiree (Dec 4), she will be coming to Lille for a trunk show of her new styles for Spring/Summer 2010, as well as the debut of her lingerie! At the meet-and-greet event she'll be talking about the philosophy behind the brand, too, which you can get a sense of through her blog. Sunny days will be here again, so make sure you're covered with a suit you love (and that loves you back).

The first two (of what will eventually be four) pop-up shops are opening for business in the heart of downtown's shopping district this evening. The result of about a year's worth of brainstorming and negotiations between public and private entities, the pop-ups serve as part of the city's plan to rejuvenate downtown along SW Morrison and Yamhill. Flurry is the larger of the two, opening in the former Shoe Pavilion at 401 SW Morrison at 5 pm this evening. Largely spearheaded by Portland Fashion Synergy President May Tee, the store will showcase Portland apparel and accessories designers (listed here) through the end of December, the hope being that it will attract shoppers going to and fro the usuals of the mall, Nordy's, et al. The landlords of both Flurry and Workroom719, down the road at 719 SW Morrison, have donated use of the spaces in the same spirit that a real estate agent would prefer to show an activated space versus a dead one. Rachel Ancliffe of the Art Institute is the curator of Workroom719, itself boasting a sweet roster of involved lines and boutiques including a special stash of shoes from Halo, the re-emergence of Entermodal, and hundreds of pieces of dead stock from Charles & Victoria, a line Ancliffe was hired to design, but which eventually fell victim to the recession (read an anticipatory article JC Report posted last year here)—those pieces will be offered at 75% off what they would have been for retail, which is essentially at cost, in a range of about $49-249 for high-end, USA-made fashion. Ancliffe will also animate the space by having the designers represented there using it to make their bag/apparel/jewelry/etc designs, further pulling in the customer to the personal experience of buying local. Workroom719 will get going tonight as well, around 5:30, and the mayor will be making appearances both there and at Flurry early in the evening, so show up when doors open to catch him and find out more about his plans to inject some life into the neighborhood and foster small businesses. Look in the coming weeks, too, for two more pop-ups opening by Thanksgiving, and next week on Thursday the 19th for the grand opening celebrations of Workroom719 and Flurry (tonight being the soft openings). I stopped in to both spaces yesterday, and there was still quite a bit of work to be done. Stay tuned for the "after" images, and hopefully I will see you there tonight!

It's never to early to start planning your social agenda as far as I and my dog eared planner are concerned. Next (first) Thursday is fillin' up mighty quick-like, and here's another one to add to the list: Radish Underground just had their birthday blow-out, but that's not stopping them from heading straight into another event with a return to their customary monthly shebang. This month's installment features the Portland line Varnish, as well as a group art show and sale they're calling the Holiday Collective Show. They've commissioned seven artists to produce works priced under $100, including painting, photography, sculpture, and ink drawings. And they will no doubt have the best spread south of W Burnside! Stop by a week from today, 5-9 pm to enjoy.

The Kevia line is featured in many national magazines and around the world, and the sale will include wholesale prices, plus $5-20 sale bins.

Kevia ring from the Bamboo collection

Kevia designer Kevia Jeffrey-West was an undergrad at Lewis & Clark College (what what!) studying in Zimbabwe when she first started designing her collections. The line really took off once she moved to SoCal, and now it's a pretty big deal, but I think we all know it was the Portland air that got her going, right? She has cited the Pacific Northwest as a source of inspiration and incorporates sustainable and fair-trade practices into all aspects of her production.

First there was the FUSE international fashion show of Portland and Chinese designers. And now that PAM has the China Design Now exhibit (Have you seen it yet? It's running through January 17, and you can read my write-up about it here) there are related events (and blog posts) springing up all over town. The one not to miss is OFFICE PDX's forum/party on Wednesday night (7-9 pm at the Froelick Gallery, 714 NW Davis). Says OFFICE's Kelly Coller:

In short:
The first part of the event is a moderated panel discussion on trends, design, consumer insights, culture and collaboration with 3 pretty amazing design leaders, all of whom have extensive experience working in China: Greg Stobbs | Retail Director for Nike, Doug Cooke | Co-Founder of Tinder Lab: A design research company, Greg Mitchell: Sr Project Manager/Design for LRS Architects, which just opened an office in Shanghai.
The 2nd part of the event is a networking/shopping party: complimentary cocktails, networking, shopping, art viewing, etc. We have selected a nice grouping of all new and cool design books about China that will be for sale that evening (shown below and online now) along with our usual 20% off portfolio sale, which we reserve just for events.
Per usual - it's free - RSVP not required but kindly requested to shop@officepdx.com - there's still room to attend the panel discussion, too.

I've seen the list of questions the panelists will be fielding, and they encompass everything from recommendations of design inspiration (take notes for your next vacation) to comparisons of the office culture in both countries. Plus the books on Chinese design look gorgeous, and New Deal Vodka will be splashing out free cocktails—holla!

(And don't forget to see the exhibit first so you have a sense of context, okay?!)

Today is the day of rest between fashion awesomeness after yesterday's cool-beyond-expectations Content '09 exhibition (wow upon wow) and tomorrow's not-to-be-missed one year anniversary party at Radish Underground. It's hard to believe, and great to know, that of all the shows in the past month there are still some Portland designers that haven't already been seen, but Minor Poet (by Kerry Ann Kimbrell and John Kwon) is one of those few. Tomorrow night at the party, the new Fall 2009 collection will be there in its entirety, along with pieces from other featured designers: Dust, Jayme Hansen, Reif, Studio SKB, Paloma Soledad, Jet Dress, Elyse Bunkers, Layers Squared, Maplexo, Adam Andreas, Aster Park, Gowan Metal, Warley Byrd, Keith McQueen, and Sahlia Michelle.

"Thousands of pieces, all super cheap" starting from $2. That's cheap. Depending on how you feel about AA, this could be a good way to stock up on some cheap tees and irregular skivvies for the fall. It could also be a headache—when they've done this kind of sale in other cities, huge bargain-hunting swarms have come out, creating massive hour-long lines, so be forewarned.

So it's been about a week's worth of self-torture ogling the orgy of new Stella McCartney lingerie and kittens that is the Lille Boutique blog—I am not exaggerating, look!

Anyway, let's just say there are some things in there I'd like to try on, and then as usual I tripped on a crack and found an excuse to stop in: Next Friday (First Friday, Oct 2) they are having their customary art opening, this time for "In the Stillness," an exhibit of paintings and sketches by Kari Dunham. And, because it will be Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 10% of the day's profits will go toward breast cancer research. There will also be a free prize drawing for those who make certain purchases, such as pink lingerie or Dunham's work. As always, Lille will pop a few corks and break out the snacks.

Labor Day is the perfect time to discuss my new favorite label, Dunderdon. Although it was created by a Swedish carpenter for builders and craftsmen, the clean lines, utilitarian fabrics and simple details make it universally wearable. These are clothes than effortlessly transition between bike and work, going out and camping.
Plus, most of the pieces are reasonably priced!
Frances May has carried the line since opening last year. For fall, they'll have several of the best pieces for men and women, including my favorite jacket.
If you want to check out the line before that, Local35 will be hosting a pop-up store dedicated entirely to Dunderdon. It'll be upstairs from their location on Hawthorne and 35th from Sept. 9 to 16th.
Forgive the blurry photo. Check out the full range on the Dunderon site.

Buyolympia.com is what you call O.G. on the DIY scene, selling work by such icons of the scene as Nikki McClure of calendar fame, who will, fittingly be the first artist to exhibit work in the new store, called LAND (what is with the ALL CAPS today?) at 3925 N Mississippi. The online operation moved to PDX last year (its warehouse has already been operating at the same address), and will open its shop full of books and zines, clothes and accessories, records, home, paper, and kids' goods on October 9th. Here's a peek at McClure's 2010 calendar, which we be on the walls during the launch:
